But because of its 48-volt mild-hybrid setup-which consists of a small electric motor called the integrated starter generator or ISG-it certainly felt quicker. With its robust 369 lb-ft of torque, 60 mpg arrives in just under six seconds, according to Audi. ![]() However, our 55 TFSI Prestige test car sported the much more potent 335-hp 3.0-liter “EA839” turbocharged V6. It’s a stout and proven unit and moves the Q7’s nearly 4800-pound curb weight more than adequately for most drivers. ![]() Its 248 horsepower is 13 horses stronger this year, but torque remains unchanged at 273 pound-feet, translating to a 0-60 time in around seven seconds. Most buyers will find VW Group’s ubiquitous “EA888” 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and eight-speed automatic in the base 45 TFSI plentiful. Performance has never been an issue for the Q7, but the same can be said of most of its competitors. The stacked double-screen setup does limit the amount of storage space in the center stack, however. Constructed of high-grade materials, the cabin is tidy and organized. That said, we expect a new Q7 to debut at some point in 2024, likely as a 2025 model. Instead, upstarts like the Genesis GV80 pose the most significant threat, as they aspire to the same core principles at a price starting thousands less. The base 45 TFSI (Turbo Fuel Stratified Injection) variants retain the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder but with more power, and the 3.0-liter six-cylinder 55 TFSI and 4.0-liter V8-powered SQ7 carry on unchanged. The Q7 sticks with its turbocharged four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines and an eight-speed automatic transmission for the time being, although the third-generation model is reportedly on track to arrive sometime in 2024. Bold fascia aside, the Q7 is a study in chunky minimalist style it’s pleasing to the eye without resorting to excessive embellishment. Still, the Audi possesses a particular blend of luxury, dynamics and minimalist Euro style that is hard to fake. And there’s no shortage of competition offering similar experiences for less money-think Acura MDX, Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT6, and the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. But the three-row crossover is a crowded segment, one the new Genesis GV80 has taken by storm. Of course, the Q7 also plays against its corporate cousin, the Porsche Cayenne, on the high side. Unfortunately, both contribute to slightly higher asking prices. As a European midsize luxury SUV, the Q7 keeps with tradition, fighting for garage space against the BMW X5, Volvo XC90 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. Engineers did tweak its base turbocharged four-cylinder to squeeze out an additional 14 horses, while the marketers added a few new colors and wheel designs and rearranged the packaging structure. The second-gen Q7 marches on unfettered at its core for 2023, utilizing the Volkswagen Group MLB Evo platform and three proven powertrain choices. Since then, it’s earned accolades for its subdued but luxurious styling, class-redefining build quality, top-notch driving dynamics, comfort and functional space. The current, second-generation Q7 arrived in 2015, bringing a new take on reserved exterior style and comprehensive tech updates and from a mild update in 2020. The Audi Q7 has remained a benchmark in the midsize three-row luxury crossover SUV segment since its 2005 global introduction.
